Description
Folic acid/vitamin B9 is a water-soluble vitamin. Folic acid is essential for the body to use sugar and amino acids, and is essential for the growth and reproduction of cells. Folic acid plays an important role in not only the cell division and growth but the synthesis of nucleic acids, amino acids and proteins. Lack of folic acid in the human body can lead to abnormal red blood cells, increased immature cells, anemia and decreased white blood cells. Folic acid is an indispensable nutrient for fetal growth and development.
Application
It is used in feed, food and nutraceutical applications and it's found naturally in many foods including dark leafy vegetables and a variety of fruits. Many foods including fortified breakfast cereals contain Folic Acid for its health benefits.
As a medication, folic acid is used to treat folic acid deficiency and certain types of anemia (lack of red blood cells) caused by folic acid deficiency.
