What is Mannitol
Mannitol is a six-carbon sugar alcohol, which can be prepared from fructose by catalytic hydrogenation, and has low hygroscopicity. It is often used as a dusting agent in the manufacture of gum sugar to avoid bonding with manufacturing equipment and packaging machinery, and it is also used as a plasticizing system component to keep it soft. It can also be used as thinner or filler of sugar tablets and chocolate coating of ice cream and candy. Has pleasant flavor, does not fade at high temperature, and is chemically inactive. Its pleasant flavor and taste can mask the smell of vitamins, minerals and herbs. It is a good anti-sticking agent, nutritional supplement, tissue improver and humectant for low-calorie sweetener, gum and candy.
Application of Product
Mannitol is commonly used in the circuit prime of a heart lung machine during cardiopulmonary bypass. The presence of mannitol preserves renal function during the times of low blood flow and pressure, while the patient is on bypass. The solution prevents the swelling of endothelial cells in the kidney, which may have otherwise reduced blood flow to this area and resulted in cell damage.
It is a type of sugar alcohol which is also used as a medication. As a sugar, mannitol is often used as a sweetener in diabetic food, as it is poorly absorbed from the intestines. As a medi cation, it is used to decrease pressure in the eyes, as in glaucoma, and to lower increased intracranial pressure.Medically, it is given by injection. Effects typically begin within 15 minutes and last up to 8 hours.
Function of Mannitol
In terms of food, the product has the least water absorption in sugars and sugar alcohols, and has a refreshing sweet taste, which is used for the foods such as maltose, chewing gum, and rice cake, and as a release powder for general cakes.
