Description
Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. It is used to treat or prevent excessive blood loss during surgery and in various other medical conditions.
It is anantifibrinolytic that competitively inhibits the activation of plasminogen to plasmin, by binding to specific sites of both plasminogen and plasmin, a molecule responsible for the degradation of fibrin, a protein that forms the framework of blood clots.
Tranexamic acid has roughly eight times theantifibrinolytic activity of an older analogue, aminocaproic acid.
Function
1.Tranexamic acid is mainly used for various types of bleeding caused by acute or chronic, localized or systemic fibrinolysis.
Application
1.Post-partum bleeding: A large, international study was conducted on the use of tranexamic acid after childbirth to prevent hemorrhaging. The trial found that tranexamic acid significantly reduced the risk of death from hemorrhaging after childbirth.
2.Mouthwash for oral procedures:
3.Nose bleeds: A topically applied tranexamic acid solution can help reduce nose bleeds.
